Eligibility: Applicants must be starting their junior or senior year in college or be in graduate school at a California school. They must be able to attend the awards ceremony in Los Angeles at their own expense. Applicants must demonstrate a desire to fulfill a leadership role in their chosen field of study and be a contributor to U.S.-Japan relations and cultural exchanges. Students must also submit an essay showing how their studies will contribute to leadership or to the relationship between the United States and Japan.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens currently enrolled at an accredited educational institution. Students must plan on studying abroad for a minimum of 30 days. Preference is given to students with unmet financial need and students traditionally underrepresented in education abroad (first-generation college students, minority students, community college students, veterans, students with disabilities and returning learners).
